Over the past couple of years I’ve started noticing that a lot of people don’t know what to do with their unwanted clothes and other fabrics. Americans throw out 85% of their clothes which is a crazy amount of fabric that can be recycled. My solution is to take unwanted fabrics from people in my community and in return and sew them their own personal surfboard bag.
I believe everyone should be influenced by my project because our environment should be taken care of. I want to inspire others to make use of their old goods and turn stuff into fun projects. This idea of re-purposing your old goods is essential because people don't know what to do with their unwanted clothes. My project is unique because I will be taking old fabric from people in my community and turning it into sustainable surfboard bags. I know from experience that surfboard bags tend to get pretty pricey, which is why making them is more affordable. |
I am passionate about protecting our environment

The 21st century skills I acquired from my experience
I used thinking and problem solving skills because I focused on one of our global issues, textile and clothing waste, and took matter into my own hands. While I was doing research I learned that 85% of all textiles are being thrown into our landfills, which is a crazy amount. For my project I wanted to influence people to make use of their old clothing and create something new out of it.

Throughout my project I used communication skills because I had to speak to a wide variety of people in my community. When I first started my project I was in need of fabric, so I made a post of what I needed on Facebook Marketplace. Within the first couple of hours there were tons of people reaching out to me and wanting to donate their unwanted fabric. I was messaging with a lot of people and scheduling meet ups. I was so grateful for everyone who donated.
